Body fat serves several important functions in the human body. Some of these functions include:

Energy Storage

Fat serves as a storage form of energy. When the body takes in more calories than it needs, the excess energy is stored in the form of fat. This stored energy can be used during periods of fasting or when the body needs extra energy.

Insulation / Protection of Organs

Fat helps to maintain body temperature. It provides a layer of insulation under the skin, preventing heat loss and protecting the body from extreme temperatures.  Fat is a component of cell membranes and is essential for the structure and function of cells. It is particularly important in the myelin sheath, which insulates nerve cells.  Fat deposits around organs provide a protective cushion, helping to prevent damage from physical impact. The visceral fat that surrounds organs in the abdominal cavity, for example, acts as a protective layer.

Hormone Regulation & Vitamin Storage

Adipose tissue (fat cells) plays a role in hormone regulation. It produces hormones and cytokines that are involved in various physiological processes, including metabolism and inflammation.  Fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E, and K) are stored in fat tissue. These vitamins play crucial roles in various bodily functions, and their storage in fat allows for a reserve when needed.
